Psalm 111

New International Version

Psalm 111^[a]

¹Praise the Lord.^[b]

I will extol the Lord^(A) with all my heart^(B)
in the council^(C) of the upright and in the assembly.^(D)

²Great are the works^(E) of the Lord;
    they are pondered by all^(F) who delight in them.
³Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
    and his righteousness endures^(G) forever.
⁴He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and compassionate.^(H)
⁵He provides food^(I) for those who fear him;^(J)
    he remembers his covenant^(K) forever.

⁶He has shown his people the power of his works,^(L)
    giving them the lands of other nations.^(M)
⁷The works of his hands^(N) are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy.^(O)
⁸They are established for ever^(P) and ever,
    enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
⁹He provided redemption^(Q) for his people;
    he ordained his covenant forever—
    holy and awesome^(R) is his name.

¹⁰The fear of the Lord^(S) is the beginning of wisdom;^(T)
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.^(U)
To him belongs eternal praise.^(V)

²³At that time I pleaded^(A) with the Lord: ²⁴“Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness^(B) and your strong hand. For what god^(C) is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works^(D) you do?^(E) ²⁵Let me go over and see the good land^(F) beyond the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.^(G)”

²⁶But because of you the Lord was angry^(H) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. ²⁷Go up to the top of Pisgah^(I) and look west and north and south and east.^(J) Look at the land with your own eyes, since you are not going to cross^(K) this Jordan.^(L) ²⁸But commission^(M) Joshua, and encourage^(N) and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across^(O) and will cause them to inherit the land that you will see.” ²⁹So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.^(P)

Romans 9:6-18

God’s Sovereign Choice

⁶It is not as though God’s word^(A) had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.^(B) ⁷Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”^[a]^(C) ⁸In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children,^(D) but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.^(E) ⁹For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”^[b]^(F)

¹⁰Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac.^(G) ¹¹Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad^(H)—in order that God’s purpose^(I) in election might stand: ¹²not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”^[c]^(J) ¹³Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”^[d]^(K)

¹⁴What then shall we say?^(L) Is God unjust? Not at all!^(M) ¹⁵For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”^[e]^(N)

¹⁶It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.^(O) ¹⁷For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”^[f]^(P) ¹⁸Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.^(Q)
